I was reading through previous threads on the subject of smart TVs ,Phones , laptops , I Pads etc which monitor your preferences and likes , selling them on to a third party.
This effects the price of the product you are going to buy. eg a 42 Ins TV would have cost X amount 15 years ago would now only cost -X. The reason for this is not advances in technology but due to the fact that they can sell on the information gathered .Once the TV is equipped with a mic (which all smarts have) the options to listen in etc are there.

Information may be valuable..but privacy is more so.

Considering that anybody anywhere can be monitored, or any computer can be hacked led me to think . Are we been sold a lemon when we are been told that Communist China and others are oppressive in their censorship of the internet and other forms of information sharing (aka information gathering).

I am not saying that poor China is misunderstood as their human right record show
But maybe when it comes to the internet they have it right .Maybe we are better off without the net in some aspects .Obviously we can look at the positives of web technology of which their are many ,but when you hear of algorithms that can accurately predict your thinking, for example the way you would vote in elections to a frighteningly degree of accuracy based on your social media preferences. We are also led to believe that the Russians and Americans are playing a game of rig the election
May that is why China is strict on the web, after all what country wants there technical infrastructure compromised.

The rise of the internet coincided with downfall of values . Society is primed for spin, misinformation, etc which leads to instability and an uncertin future for mankind.

Are Samsung's Smart TVs really listening in on your conversations?

Young people in China don't know the internet we do – and they like it that way
